Over the past few hours, the new U.S. dietary guidelines have been released. After reviewing them, I identified ten points that stand out as particularly significant.
What truly matters, however, goes beyond individual recommendations. What we are witnessing is a historic shift.
In my 23 years working in nutrition, I have never seen a country change direction so clearly and decisively.
And let’s be clear: let’s not feel superior to the United States.
Global trends in obesity and metabolic health are deeply concerning worldwide, serious enough to resemble a true pandemic.
The key difference is that this is a pandemic we can address with more rational nutrition, practical strategies that fit real life, and food choices that are coherent and sustainable. The approach that has guided public recommendations so far has simply not delivered the expected results.
Some aspects of these new guidelines openly conflict with many of the products that currently dominate supermarket shelves, especially in the U.S., but not only there.
Setting aside nutritional ideologies and dogmas, it is hard to ignore the evidence and the words of @seckennedy himself: for the first time, the foundation of these guidelines is neither ideology nor fear of individual nutrients.
It is real food.
